Opinions differ over whether it is necessary to remove moss from a roof. Some people would argue that it is a pointless service and the moss isn’t doing any harm. But what do the industry professionals say?

Did you know that the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) recommend moss removal to avoid potential damage to the roof? When looking at buying a property, surveyors suggest that you should always consider the state of the roof. If it has any problems that are left untreated, you can end up paying thousands to solve the issue.

This roof was suffering from a build up of moss and severe algae

Recently, we helped Ross, who has just moved house, who contacted us after receiving his property survey. Here’s what he had to say:

“We recently moved into a new house and as part of the purchase process we arranged a RICS building survey. One section of the report describes roof coverings and this raised a point about some mortar cracking as well as another interesting point regarding moss growth.

It was mentioned these points should be resolved to ensure the roof remains water tight. I found A E Mackintosh via YouTube so I watched a few of their videos and found the transformations very satisfying. Not only that but Ashley was very knowledgeable about careful roof cleaning techniques and came across passionate about what he does. I looked up where he operated and was happy to see that he was fairly local so I didn’t hesitate to ask for a quote.

We’re extremely pleased with the finished results and now all the neighbours are also getting it done!”

The roof cleaning transformation in action

As you can see, Ross was very happy with the result and has protected his investment and increased the longevity of his roof. He also has potentially saved money by not allowing growth of moss and lichen to escalate and cause larger, more complicated issues that would cost a lot to fix.

What kind of issues could this moss growth have realistically caused?

Over time, moss can cause roofing materials to degrade. Why? Moss acts like a sponge and can hold up to 5 time its weight in moisture, resulting in your roof being constantly wet, threatening the structural integrity. Even a relatively small amount of moss can become far too heavy for a roof. This trapped moisture also has been known to cause damage to decking and joists.

If a roof isn’t properly maintained, an insurer can reject any claims related to roof damage. Which is another reason why a surveyor would recommend the removal of moss from your roof. With the increase of storms experienced across the country, it is becoming even more of a necessity to keep your roof in the best possible condition it can be in!

Great results from our roof cleaning service

High pressure cleaning is not recommended to clean roof tiles because of the fear of causing damage to the tiles. However, we use a low pressure set-up especially adapted for roof cleaning so that it does not damage the tiles.

Ross is just one example of a customer that has experienced the satisfying benefits of our specialist service which certainly has not been pointless in any way!

Why not reach out to see if you can benefit from my years of experience in offering the best way to protect and maintain roofs?
